Careers with North Star Vets: How our team contribute to our growth

“It’s corny – but Westbrook is our home away from home!”

Our head receptionist at Westbrook, Kelly, has been with the practice since its launch and has played a key role in our early story.

It’s been a pleasure to watch her grow at the same time!

Do you think you could go on a similar journey with North Star?

I’ve worked in the industry for seven years now.

I had very different experiences at the first two practices in my career, good and bad! That perspective puts me in a great place to understand what we do differently at Westbrook – and why it works.

Hopefully by reading about my time here you can get an idea of why North Star practices are great places to work, and why you should join us!

As soon as I walked into the practice I could tell that things were different here

I was completely new to the industry when I joined my first practice but it quickly felt like a family – we got along very well and worked together as a team.

It was a bit of a shock to the system at my second stop as it was completely different.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to return to my first practice – but the problem was that things were quiet and we often didn’t have a vet in practice. Clients could see how difficult it was.

I actually caught wind of Westbrook setting up via a client. She was asking how we thought we’d get on with a new practice opening in the area.

Once I heard about Westbrook, the rest was history!

As soon as I walked into the practice I could tell that things were different here.

“It’s corny – but Westbrook is our home away from home!”

Things have taken off so well and it’s really nice to see our hard work paying off as we go from strength to strength. We’re just so busy!

The team that we’ve built work so well together and we’re growing all the time.

Being in a corporate veterinary environment, you’re just a number. There’s no personalisation, there’s no thanks – it can be really sad.

Even something like HR – in previous practices I’m sure they had HR teams but we didn’t have a clue who they were, whereas at North Star we have Christy who is so lovely, it makes such a difference.

From my first conversations with the directors – they couldn’t have been more helpful and you can tell that they genuinely care about each member of the team.

It’s been so lovely and so rewarding opening up this practice and watching it grow.

The best way to describe Westbrook is our home away from home, which sounds corny! But  it’s the only way I can explain how good it is to feel comfortable and happy while at work.

“The team have been so supportive – in every way”

When we first opened, Burford Lane were already up and running, so it was so nice to know that they were there for us at the end of the phone if we needed a chat.

All of their team have been really helpful and lovely.

And then Sandymoor opened within a week of us, and between the two teams we all had each other’s backs, and that’s still the case today. If anybody needs anything they don’t need to ask twice.

Even though we are three independent practices we come together and we’re there for each other – and the Christmas parties are great fun too!

The leadership team have been so supportive of my development and they understand that it’s important to keep learning new skills and bringing knowledge back into the practice.

I’d started working towards my BVRA receptionist qualifications before my time at Westbrook, and I was really keen to carry on and push towards the gold award once I’d joined.

I thought it would be great for me, the practice and for other team members for me to pass that knowledge on.

I know that they’d support the CPD goals of all the team, and we’ve actually put in place now that all of our receptionists will be sponsored through at least the bronze stage of the BVRA qualifications when they join us.

It’s so rewarding to feel like you’re making a difference

Working at a North Star practice, you’re supported, you’re respected – from the directors down throughout the business.

I would never have expected to be in a practice where the people at the very top are so engaged and thoughtful, and building personal relationships with all of the team.

Working alongside Rhys has been a breath of fresh air and it’s so rewarding to feel like you’re making a difference to the practice.

I’d say if you’re looking for a new opportunity where you can challenge yourself, learn and grow – do it! It’s the best thing you could do.
